Yeah, right.
I couldn’t take another day of this!
Was Han Zhi even human?
I’d barely fallen asleep when he yanked the covers off my head.
“Get up and eat. We’re going to the hospital for your checkup.”
I groaned, “You go if you want I’m not going”
Resistance was futile. Han Zhi was stronger and just dragged me out of bed.
“What are you whining about? You’ve slept eight hours. Your limbs aren’t going to atrophy.”
I shot back, “Last time I only slept five hours... and you were still in bed while I was at work...”
He just said, “Stop whining. I can’t understand you.”
A warm shower woke me up a bit, but my body still felt like overcooked noodles.
I grumbled at Han Zhi the whole way, but for once, he just listened quietly, probably feeling a little guilty.
After the checkup, he transferred me 10,000 yuan way more than the usual 1,000.
He’d set this rule before we got together: a full checkup every month, probably to make sure I wasn’t messing around behind his back.
I couldn’t tell if he thought too highly of me or too little of himself, but hey, 1,000 yuan per visit and an excuse to check my health Why not.
This time, my results were even better than last month.
One thing about being with Han Zhi he made sure I was never malnourished.
I looked in the mirror, cheeks rosier than they’d been in years, and couldn’t help but hum a happy tune.
But Han Zhi didn’t look happy at all.
Why wasn’t he glad I was healthy?
Wasn’t that the whole point of these checkups?
Unless...
Maybe he didn’t want me to be healthy because he wanted to break up, and was hoping for an excuse.
But it’s been over a month since his “first love” supposedly came back, and nothing’s happened.
Could it be that Han Zhi... actually fell for me?
But if that was true, he should be happy about my health, not upset.
So, there’s only one explanation.
Han Zhi wants to break up, but I’m too perfect, so he can’t find a reason.
He hoped to find something in my checkup, but I passed with flying colors. That’s why he’s upset!
Realizing this, I felt a little sad.
Come on, Lin Qing, what have you been doing these past months?
You let a stubborn, prideful guy like Han Zhi struggle to find a breakup excuse.
No wonder your “breakup compensation” is in jeopardy.
Time to take the initiative.
But how?
I couldn’t just say, “I don’t like you anymore, let’s break up.”
What if this capitalist jerk turned around and demanded a breakup fee from me?
No, I had to let him make the first move.
I decided to tell a little white lie.
Next time Han Zhi went on a business trip, I’d say his first love came to see me, told me their tragic love story, and I was so moved I decided to step aside.
All planned out, I waited for Han Zhi’s next trip.
I was a little nervous Han Zhi could read me like a book.
Sometimes he knew what I was up to before I did.
But this time, luck was on my side.
Guess what?
Han Zhi’s first love, Jiang Xueying, actually showed up at my door with his mother, Mrs. Han, in tow.
They came for one reason: Jiang Xueying tried to persuade me with tears, and Mrs. Han tried to buy me off.
I was so moved (and stressed) I cried right in front of them.
Seeing me cry, both of them looked shocked.
I grabbed Jiang Xueying’s hand, sobbing, “Your love is so touching I never wanted to come between you two. It’s just... just...”
While I cried, I subtly shifted the blame to Han Zhi.
“He never told me about you. I didn’t know. I never meant to stay.”
Of course, I was trying to drive a wedge between them.
Let Han Zhi deal with his own mess.
Their faces darkened even more.
Jiang Xueying hesitated, then played me a recording on her phone.
The background was noisy, but Han Zhi’s voice was clear, along with another man’s.
After some small talk, the other man asked,
“Xueying’s back. Why haven’t you dumped that gold-digger yet?”
Han Zhi snorted, “She’s dying for a breakup payout. She should look at herself first.”
Then came a string of insults about me.
I nearly smashed the phone in rage.
Han Zhi, you bastard! Trying to get rid of me for free?
While I was fuming, Mrs. Han slid a bank card across the table.
“There’s five million yuan on this. Consider it compensation. Leave Yucheng.”
I blinked. “Why do I have to leave Yucheng?”
Mrs. Han replied, “I know my son. If you stay, you’ll never keep the money.”
That made me even angrier.
How could Han Zhi be like this?
I blurted out, “Then maybe you should control your son.”
Mrs. Han was speechless for a moment, then snapped, “If I could, would I be here talking to you?”
She pulled out a second card.
“If it’s not enough, here’s another five million. Ten million if you leave Han Zhi and Yucheng.”
I hesitated.
Leaving Han Zhi was fine, but leaving Yucheng... I wasn’t thrilled.
But ten million? I’d put up with Han Zhi for months for a fraction of that.
Mrs. Han, seeing my hesitation, got impatient.
“You want more?”
Before I could answer, she pulled out a third card.
“This is the last time. Twenty million. Leave Han Zhi and Yucheng.”
Twenty million!
Even in Yucheng, that could buy a luxury apartment.
Any more hesitation would be rude.
After three seconds, I took the card.
Fine, I’d leave for a while. Once everyone forgot about me, I could come back and buy a place.
“Deal! But you’ll have to sign a gift agreement,” I said.
They both relaxed a bit, Mrs. Han snorting, “You really are just after the money.”
I tensed.
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you messing with me? Are these cards even loaded?”
Mrs. Han snorted again, but before she could answer, the front door opened.
“Quite the party, huh?”
